Where is the outer layer of weave?
What are the materials used for the outer braided layer?
In Textiles field, product have 4 commonly material be used for outer layer weaving: Polypropylene (PE), polyester (PET), nylon, UHMWPE.
in 4 materials PET and PP are standard materials for weaving bungee cord, and then is nylon. this article will be focus on polyester and polypropylene shock cord.
| Project | PP | PET |
| Abrasion Resistance | Moderater | Stronger |
| UV Resistance | Lower, more prone to aging | Better |
| Tensile Strength | Lower | Higher |
| Texture / Feel | Rougher | Smoother, finer |
| Water Absorption | Almost none | Low |
| Buoyancy | Floats | Does not float |
| Heat Resistance | Lower | Higher |
| Cost | More affordabl | Higher |
| Appearance Quality | Standard | Premium |
| Service Life | Shorter | Longer |
Which material is better?
In production, MFU bungee cord manufacturer recommends the polyester version.
Polyester is a reinforced material with high heat resistance, high abrasion resistance, and high elongation. It is further divided into ordinary polyester, medium-strength polyester, and high-strength polyester, each grade used for products in different fields.
According to the characteristics table, the only drawback of polyester is that, for the same diameter, it is 17% heavier than polypropylene.
Therefore, when you expect better elongation and optimal product performance, polyester is more suitable, as its cost increase compared to polypropylene is negligible.
